What starboard means on board
Starboard is the right-hand side of the sailboat when you face forward. It is the partner of port. Between the two words they cover both sides of the boat in a clear and fixed way.
The advantage is the same: they do not depend on where each person is standing. In a small group, where everyone is looking somewhere different, having a shared reference saves confusion. Everyone understands the same thing from a single word.
Where you live it on our outings
On every passage we carry a professional skipper and a specialist guide. They are the eyes of the group. When something appears in the water, they call it out using port or starboard so that you look to the right side without hesitating.
The sea is not a stage. We never promise a show. But we sail under canvas and in silence, and that silence lets the wildlife decide to come closer. If it does so on the right, you will hear “to starboard”. Then the whole group turns to look at the same time, almost holding its breath.
We do not sell an excursion, we share an experience. Handling these words makes you feel part of the crew and not merely a passenger. It is a small gesture that changes how you live the day.
A detail to remember
The word starboard comes from the old steering oar that boats once carried on the right-hand side, before the central rudder existed. As it was worked from that side, it became linked with the right of the boat.
That very practical origin explains why the sea has its own language. Every word holds centuries of craft. On board Aemón or Ayla you do not need to know that story to enjoy yourself, but knowing it adds a touch of charm to the trip. Starboard on the right, port on the left, and the wind takes care of the rest.
