The Experience

A sailing outing to understand the sea, not just to look at it

What does the Picarus Sailing Club experience involve?

A sailing outing from the port of Los Gigantes (Tenerife) along the Teno-Rasca Marine Strip, one of the most important marine areas in Europe. Watching cetaceans —tropical pilot whales, bottlenose dolphins and other species— is one part of an experience that also includes swimming, snorkelling, an on-board aperitif and interpretation of the ecosystem by a professional skipper and a specialist guide.

The Experience

Much more than a boat trip

At Picarus we believe the sea is not a stage: it is a living ecosystem that deserves to be known, understood and protected. That is why we don’t sell a single-animal trip, but a different way of connecting with the ocean.

Cetacean watching is one part of the outing, not the whole. On the same trip we sail when the sea allows, interpret the surroundings, swim and snorkel, and share an aperitif by the cliffs. We want you to return to shore looking at the sea differently.

  1. Before you board

The experience begins the moment you decide to book. Before departure you’ll receive all the information to reach the port comfortably, know what to bring and clear up any doubts. We work with small groups and close communication: you won’t be a number in a crowded excursion.

  2. The welcome at the port

We meet at the port of Los Gigantes and welcome you personally. You’ll have time to get to know the sailboat, leave your belongings and hear the basic safety rules. No rush, no queues, no hundreds of people waiting to board.

  3. Setting sail

As we leave the port and switch off the engine, the sound changes completely: only the wind and the water on the hull. That silence lets the wildlife approach with more confidence. Dolphins in particular love to play by the bow, riding the boat’s wave — an unforgettable sight. We never promise a show; we promise real nature.

  4. Sailing the Teno-Rasca Marine Strip

Our route runs through a protected area of enormous biodiversity, vital for many cetacean species. Throughout the trip we interpret the surroundings: why this area matters, how the resident cetaceans live, what they feed on, the threats they face and how underwater noise affects them. We believe you only protect what you know.

  5. Watching the cetaceans

There is no script: nature decides. We mainly watch tropical pilot whales and bottlenose dolphins, though at certain times of year many other species may appear. We always keep a respectful distance, never chase the animals or interfere with their behaviour. That respect is what makes the encounter special.

  6. The stop to swim and snorkel

When conditions allow, we anchor in a calm spot of crystal-clear water by the cliffs. You can swim away from crowded beaches and snorkel with the gear we provide, discovering volcanic seabeds and fish typical of Canary waters. Wildlife watching comes first: depending on how long it takes, there will be more or less time for the swim.

  7. An aperitif on board

While the boat is anchored we serve an aperitif made with simple, quality products, along with drinks. Eating on a sailboat, surrounded by cliffs and with the ocean as the only backdrop, is part of the experience itself.

  8. The return to port

We sail back sharing impressions and keeping watch in case a new visitor appears. We re-enter the port with the feeling of having lived something authentic: not just another tourist activity, but an experience connected with the sea.

Verified sightings

What we have seen at sea

These are the latest real sightings logged on board by our guides with GeoReport, trip after trip, in the Teno-Rasca marine strip.

They are published one day later and without coordinates: we share what the sea gives us without pointing at where the animals are.

Our recommendations

Experiences from partner companies that share our philosophy of respect for nature, along with our own holiday house in the north of the island. They are an extension of your trip around Tenerife; they are not part of the Picarus sailing outing.

Bookings are made directly with each partner company, and Picarus Home is booked on its own website; each page explains the details.
